Two PhD Students from Our School Receive Funding from the First Batch of NSFC Basic Research Grants for Young Students

April 28, 2024

Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the list of projects for the inaugural pilot of the NSFC Basic Research Grants for Young Students (Doctoral Programs) in 2023. Our school was pleased to announce that two of our projects have been funded, with the recipients being doctoral students Chen Qi and Ding Haizhen, supervised by Professor Wu Ting and Professor Chen Hongmin, respectively.

Chen Qi, specializing in Epidemiology and Health Statistics, focuses his research on HPV epidemiological studies and clinical evaluation of vaccines. As a core member of the team, he has participated in a series of clinical trials and research projects on innovative vaccines such as domestic bivalent and nine-valent HPV vaccines and influenza virus vector COVID-19 vaccine for intranasal spray He has authored or co-authored 6 papers in prestigious journals such as The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, eClinical Medicine, Emerging Microbes & Infections, and other journals. During his study, Chen Qi was selected for Xiamen University's "Nanqiang Outstanding Doctoral Students Cultivation Program" and has received numerous honors, including Meritorious Students, Outstanding Communist Youth League Members, and Top Ten Outstanding Students Scholarships.

Ding Haizhen, specializing in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, directs his research toward the design of molecular imaging probes and its basic research on cancer diagnosis and treatment. He has published 7 SCI papers in Angewandte Chemie International Edition (two papers), Small, Chinese Chemical Letters, and other journals as the first or co-first author. Ding has participated in numerous high-level domestic and international academic conferences and has been honored with the National Scholarships, Meritorious Students, Silver Prize at the Challenge Cup, and the Best Oral Presentation Award from the Biomedical Imaging Technology Branch of the China Medicinal Biotechnology Association.

The NSFC Basic Research Program for Young Students (Doctoral Programs) was established on a pilot basis in 2023-with the aim of supporting doctoral students in conducting independent basic research within the scope of NSFC funding. This program focuses on cultivating students' ability to carry out scientific research independently, enhancing their research interests, stimulating innovative thinking, and improving their scientific literacy. In doing so, it lays a solid foundation for students' future scientific research careers and provides a high-quality talent pool for building a high-level basic research team. During the pilot implementation period, the funding duration was two or three years, with a funding intensity of 300,000 RMB per project.
